When at court, either physically or online, it is important to be respectful.
When in court:
- enter and leave quietly
- bow your head to the magistrate, judge or registrar when you enter and before you leave
- stand and bow your head when a magistrate, judge or registrar enters or leaves the courtroom
- turn off mobile phones and other electronic equipment
- address the magistrate as 'Your Honour', 'Sir' or 'Madam'
- address the judge as ‘Your Honour'
- address the registrar of the Court as 'Registrar' or 'Your Honour’
- stand when the magistrate, judge or registrars peaks to you
- dress smartly and neatly – take off hats or sunglasses
- do not talk, eat, chew gum or smoke
- do not video or audio record the hearing.
Court is open to the public. Hearings will only be closed when there are special circumstances.
If you attend an open hearing as observer, you will sit in the public gallery which is usually at the back of the courtroom.
